Watch out with hastalık

  • Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: hastalığı, hastalığa, hastalığım (not *hastalıkı). Before a consonant it stays hard: hastalıkta, hastalıklar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: hastalıkta, hastalıktan (not *hastalıkda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of hastalığın. hastalığın is both "of the illness" (genitive) and "your illness" (possessive). hastalığı is likewise both the object form and "his/her illness". Rule →

Questions about hastalık

What is the plural of hastalık?

The plural of hastalık ("illness") is hastalıklar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of hastalık is ı, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: hastalıkları, hastalıklarda, hastalıklardan.

How do you say "to the illness" in Turkish?

"To the illness" is hastalığa, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the illness" is hastalıkta (locative) and "from the illness" is hastalıktan (ablative).

Why does hastalık become hastalığı?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Hastalık follows this rule, so the accusative is hastalığı and "my illness" is hastalığım. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: hastalıkta, hastalıklar.
