Turkish Locative Case (-de / -da / -te / -ta): Location & Possession (Var/Yok)
Understanding the Locative Case (Bulunma Hali)
The locative case tells you where something or someone is located. It translates to in, on, at, or with.
Suffix: -de / -da (or -te / -ta after voiceless consonants: F, S, T, K, Ç, Ş, H, P).
Consonant Harmony: When Does D Turn Into T?
Remember the mnemonic FıSTıKÇı ŞaHaP (The pistachio seller Şahap). If the word ends in one of these consonants: f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p, the suffix starts with T:
park→ parkta (in the park)ofis→ ofiste (in the office)market→ markette (at the grocery store)
Otherwise, it starts with D:
ev→ evde (at home)araba→ arabada (in the car)İstanbul→ İstanbul’da (in Istanbul)
Expressing Possession: “I Have…” in Turkish
Turkish has no verb for “to have”. Instead, it says: “At me, there exists…”:
Bende para var.= I have money (Literally: At me, money exists).Sende anahtar var mı?= Do you have the key?
