Turkish Personal Pronouns & Verb 'To Be' Suffixes (Ben, Sen, O...)

Master Turkish personal pronouns (Ben, Sen, O, Biz, Siz, Onlar) and the present tense 'to be' endings (-(y)im, -sin, -dir).

Turkish Personal Pronouns & Verb ‘To Be’ Suffixes (Ben, Sen, O…)

Turkish Personal Pronouns Overview

Turkish has six personal pronouns:

Pronoun English Meaning Usage Note
Ben I 1st person singular
Sen You Informal / singular (friends, family, kids)
O He / She / It Gender-neutral! Turkish has no grammatical gender.
Biz We 1st person plural
Siz You Polite singular (formal) OR plural (you all)
Onlar They 3rd person plural

The Verb “To Be” as a Suffix (İyiyim, Öğretmensin)

Turkish does not use a standalone verb like “am / is / are”. Instead, existence in the present tense is indicated by suffixes attached directly to nouns or adjectives:

Example with öğretmen (teacher):

  • Ben öğretmen + -im(Ben) öğretmenim = I am a teacher.
  • Sen öğretmen + -sin(Sen) öğretmensin = You are a teacher.
  • O öğretmen(O) öğretmen (or öğretmendir) = He/She is a teacher.
  • Biz öğretmen + -iz(Biz) öğretmeniz = We are teachers.
  • Siz öğretmen + -siniz(Siz) öğretmensiniz = You are teachers / You (formal) are a teacher.
  • Onlar öğretmen + -ler(Onlar) öğretmenler = They are teachers.

Pro Tip: Because the suffix on the noun or verb already identifies who is performing the action, native speakers usually drop the pronouns (Ben, Sen, etc.) unless they want to emphasize contrast!

Declension of Personal Pronouns

Here’s how Ben (I) and Sen (You) decline. Other pronouns follow similar patterns with regular vowel harmony. Note the irregular stem vowel changes for BenBana and SenSana in the dative case.

Ben (I)

  • Nominative: Ben (I)
  • Genitive: Benim (My / of me)
  • Accusative: Beni (Me — direct object)
  • Dative: Bana (To me — note vowel change)
  • Locative: Bende (On me / with me / at my place)
  • Ablative: Benden (From me)

Example: Ben okula gidiyorum. (I am going to school.)
Example: Bana yardım et. (Help me.)

Sen (You — singular informal)

  • Nominative: Sen (You)
  • Genitive: Senin (Your / of you)
  • Accusative: Seni (You — direct object)
  • Dative: Sana (To you — note vowel change)
  • Locative: Sende (On you / with you / at your place)
  • Ablative: Senden (From you)

Example: Sen ne yapıyorsun? (What are you doing?)
Example: Sana bir sır vereceğim. (I will give you a secret.)

O (He / She / It)

  • Nominative: O (He / She / It)
  • Genitive: Onun (His / Her / Its)
  • Accusative: Onu (Him / Her / It — direct object)
  • Dative: Ona (To him / her / it)
  • Locative: Onda (On him/her/it / with him/her/it)
  • Ablative: Ondan (From him/her/it)

Biz, Siz, Onlar (Plural Pronouns)

The pronouns Biz (We), Siz (You — pl./formal), and Onlar (They) decline regularly by adding the standard case suffixes directly, following vowel harmony:

  • Example (Biz): Bizim (our), Bizi (us), Bize (to us), Bizde (with us), Bizden (from us).
  • Example (Siz): Sizin (your), Sizi (you), Size (to you), Sizde (with you), Sizden (from you).
  • Example (Onlar): Onların (their), Onları (them), Onlara (to them), Onlarda (with them), Onlardan (from them).
