Turkish Present Continuous Tense (-iyor): Step-by-Step Conjugation Guide

Conjugate the Turkish present continuous (-iyor): harmony tables, vowel-ending stems, git → gidiyor, negatives, questions, uses, mistakes and exercises.

By TurkLogic Editorial TeamPublished Updated 6 min read

The present continuous, şimdiki zaman, is the first tense most learners meet, and the most frequent one in everyday conversation. Its marker is -iyor: geliyorum (I am coming), ne yapıyorsun? (what are you doing?). Compared with English “am/is/are + -ing”, it covers more ground: it also expresses states like “I know” and “I love”, and planned near-future actions. This guide gives the formation rules, full tables for every vowel type, the stem changes to watch for, negatives, questions and the main uses.

The formula

verb stem + -(ı/i/u/ü)yor + personal ending

  1. Remove the infinitive ending: gelmek → gel-, yapmak → yap- (see verb stems and infinitives).
  2. Add the harmony vowel chosen by 4-way vowel harmony, then -yor. The -yor part never changes.
  3. Add the “to be”-type personal ending. Because -yor contains o, the endings always use u: -um, -sun, –, -uz, -sunuz, -lar.
Last vowel of stem Tense vowel Example
a, ı ı → -ıyor yap → yapıyor, kır → kırıyor
e, i i → -iyor gel → geliyor, bil → biliyor
o, u u → -uyor koş → koşuyor, bul → buluyor
ö, ü ü → -üyor gör → görüyor, gül → gülüyor

Full conjugation tables

Person gelmek (come) yapmak (do) koşmak (run) görmek (see)
ben geliyorum yapıyorum koşuyorum görüyorum
sen geliyorsun yapıyorsun koşuyorsun görüyorsun
o geliyor yapıyor koşuyor görüyor
biz geliyoruz yapıyoruz koşuyoruz görüyoruz
siz geliyorsunuz yapıyorsunuz koşuyorsunuz görüyorsunuz
onlar geliyorlar yapıyorlar koşuyorlar görüyorlar

You can generate the table for any verb in the verb conjugator.

Stems ending in a vowel

Stems ending in a or e: the vowel drops

If the stem ends in a or e, that vowel disappears and the tense vowel harmonises with the vowel before it:

Infinitive Stem Present continuous Why
başlamak (start) başla- başlıyor a drops; previous vowel a → ı
beklemek (wait) bekle- bekliyor e drops; previous vowel e → i
anlamak (understand) anla- anlıyor a drops; previous vowel a → ı
oynamak (play) oyna- oynuyor a drops; previous vowel o → u
söylemek (say) söyle- söylüyor e drops; previous vowel ö → ü
özlemek (miss) özle- özlüyor e drops; previous vowel ö → ü
yaşamak (live) yaşa- yaşıyor a drops; previous vowel a → ı

Stems ending in ı, i, u, ü: just add -yor

oku- (read) → okuyor, yürü- (walk) → yürüyor, uyu- (sleep) → uyuyor, taşı- (carry) → taşıyor.

The two one-syllable e-verbs: demek and yemek

de- (say) and ye- (eat) become diyor and yiyor: Ne diyorsun? (What are you saying?) Çocuklar yemek yiyor. (The children are eating.)

t → d in some verbs

A few common verbs ending in t soften it before the vowel (consonant mutation):

  • gitmek (go) → gidiyor
  • etmek (do, make) → ediyor (also in compounds: yardım ediyor, teşekkür ediyorum)
  • tatmak (taste) → tadıyor

Most other t-stems keep their t: bitmek → bitiyor, satmak → satıyor, atmak → atıyor.

Negative: -mıyor / -miyor / -muyor / -müyor

Add the negative suffix -me/-ma to the stem. Its vowel then behaves like a stem-final a/e: it narrows and harmonises, giving -mıyor, -miyor, -muyor, -müyor.

Person gelmek anlamak okumak görmek
ben gelmiyorum anlamıyorum okumuyorum görmüyorum
sen gelmiyorsun anlamıyorsun okumuyorsun görmüyorsun
o gelmiyor anlamıyor okumuyor görmüyor
biz gelmiyoruz anlamıyoruz okumuyoruz görmüyoruz
siz gelmiyorsunuz anlamıyorsunuz okumuyorsunuz görmüyorsunuz
onlar gelmiyorlar anlamıyorlar okumuyorlar görmüyorlar

Note that in the negative the stem keeps its final vowel: anla-ma- → anlamıyorum. Negation in general is explained in negation with -me/-ma, değil and yok.

Questions: mu + personal ending

The question particle is a separate word. After -yor it is always mu, and it carries the personal ending (except for onlar):

Person Positive question Negative question
ben geliyor muyum? gelmiyor muyum?
sen geliyor musun? gelmiyor musun?
o geliyor mu? gelmiyor mu?
biz geliyor muyuz? gelmiyor muyuz?
siz geliyor musunuz? gelmiyor musunuz?
onlar geliyorlar mı? gelmiyorlar mı?

Negative questions are often invitations or mild surprise: Gelmiyor musun? (Aren’t you coming?)

When to use -iyor

  1. Right now: Şu an yemek yapıyorum. (I’m cooking right now.)
  2. Around now / these days: Bu ara Türkçe öğreniyorum. (I’m learning Turkish these days.)
  3. Planned near future: Yarın İzmir’e gidiyoruz. (We’re going to İzmir tomorrow.)
  4. States and feelings that English puts in the simple present: biliyorum (I know), anlıyorum (I understand), istiyorum (I want), seviyorum (I love), tanıyorum (I know [a person]).
  5. Current habits in speech: Her sabah yürüyorum. (I walk every morning these days.) For timeless habits and general truths, the aorist tense is used instead: Kediler süt sever. (Cats like milk.)

For “was doing”, add -du: geliyordum (I was coming); see the past continuous.

Spoken shortcuts

In casual speech the r of -yor is often dropped: geliyom, ne yapıyosun, biliyo musun? You will hear and read this in messages, but write the full forms in anything formal.

Frequently asked questions

How do you form the present continuous in Turkish?

Take the verb stem (remove -mek/-mak), add -ıyor, -iyor, -uyor or -üyor according to the stem's last vowel, then add the personal ending: gel- → geliyorum (I am coming), yap- → yapıyorsun (you are doing).

What happens to verbs ending in a vowel, like başlamak?

The final a or e of the stem drops and the -yor vowel harmonises with the vowel before it: başla- → başlıyor, bekle- → bekliyor, oyna- → oynuyor, söyle- → söylüyor. Stems ending in ı, i, u, ü just add -yor: oku- → okuyor.

Can -iyor be used for the future?

Yes, for planned or arranged near-future actions, as in English: Yarın Ankara'ya gidiyorum (I'm going to Ankara tomorrow).

Why do Turks say 'biliyorum' and 'seviyorum' when English says 'I know' and 'I love'?

Turkish uses -iyor for many states that English expresses with the simple present: biliyorum (I know), anlıyorum (I understand), seviyorum (I love), istiyorum (I want).
