Kayıp Declension: Turkish Cases of 'loss'

kayıp means “loss”. Its last vowel is ı, so 2-way suffixes use a (kayıplar) and 4-way suffixes use ı (kaybın). Before a vowel it both loses its last vowel and softens its final consonant: kaybı, kayba.

Watch out with kayıp

  • The last vowel drops. Before a vowel suffix the second vowel disappears: kaybı, kayba, kaybım (not *kayıbı, *kayıba). Consonant suffixes keep it: kayıpta, kayıplar. Rule →
  • Softening before vowels. Final p softens before a vowel: kaybı, kayba, kaybım (not *kaybı). Before a consonant it stays hard: kayıpta, kayıplar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: kayıpta, kayıptan (not *kayıpda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of kaybın. kaybın is both "of the loss" (genitive) and "your loss" (possessive). kaybı is likewise both the object form and "his/her loss". Rule →

Questions about kayıp

What is the plural of kayıp?

The plural of kayıp ("loss") is kayıplar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of kayıp is ı, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: kayıpları, kayıplarda, kayıplardan.

How do you say "to the loss" in Turkish?

"To the loss" is kayba, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the loss" is kayıpta (locative) and "from the loss" is kayıptan (ablative).

Why is it kaybı and not kayıpı?

Kayıp belongs to a group of two-syllable nouns (mostly Arabic loans and body parts) whose second vowel drops when a vowel-initial suffix follows: kaybı, kayba, kaybım. With consonant-initial suffixes the vowel stays: kayıpta, kayıplar.
