Fikir in example sentences

Watch out with fikir

  • The last vowel drops. Before a vowel suffix the second vowel disappears: fikri, fikre, fikrim (not *fikiri, *fikire). Consonant suffixes keep it: fikirde, fikirler. Rule →
  • Two meanings of fikrin. fikrin is both "of the idea" (genitive) and "your idea" (possessive). fikri is likewise both the object form and "his/her idea". Rule →

Questions about fikir

What is the plural of fikir?

The plural of fikir ("idea") is fikirler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of fikir is i, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: fikirleri, fikirlerde, fikirlerden.

How do you say "to the idea" in Turkish?

"To the idea" is fikre, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the idea" is fikirde (locative) and "from the idea" is fikirden (ablative).

Why is it fikri and not fikiri?

Fikir belongs to a group of two-syllable nouns (mostly Arabic loans and body parts) whose second vowel drops when a vowel-initial suffix follows: fikri, fikre, fikrim. With consonant-initial suffixes the vowel stays: fikirde, fikirler.
