Watch out with göğüs

  • The last vowel drops. Before a vowel suffix the second vowel disappears: göğsü, göğse, göğsüm (not *göğüsü, *göğüse). Consonant suffixes keep it: göğüste, göğüsler. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: göğüste, göğüsten (not *göğüsde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of göğsün. göğsün is both "of the chest" (genitive) and "your chest" (possessive). göğsü is likewise both the object form and "his/her chest". Rule →

Questions about göğüs

What is the plural of göğüs?

The plural of göğüs ("chest") is göğüsler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of göğüs is ü, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: göğüsleri, göğüslerde, göğüslerden.

How do you say "to the chest" in Turkish?

"To the chest" is göğse, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the chest" is göğüste (locative) and "from the chest" is göğüsten (ablative).

Why is it göğsü and not göğüsü?

Göğüs belongs to a group of two-syllable nouns (mostly Arabic loans and body parts) whose second vowel drops when a vowel-initial suffix follows: göğsü, göğse, göğsüm. With consonant-initial suffixes the vowel stays: göğüste, göğüsler.
