Kayıt Declension: Turkish Cases of 'record'

kayıt means “record, registration”. Its last vowel is ı, so 2-way suffixes use a (kayıtlar) and 4-way suffixes use ı (kaydın). Before a vowel it both loses its last vowel and softens its final consonant: kaydı, kayda.

Watch out with kayıt

  • The last vowel drops. Before a vowel suffix the second vowel disappears: kaydı, kayda, kaydım (not *kayıdı, *kayıda). Consonant suffixes keep it: kayıtta, kayıtlar. Rule →
  • Softening before vowels. Final t softens before a vowel: kaydı, kayda, kaydım (not *kaydı). Before a consonant it stays hard: kayıtta, kayıtlar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: kayıtta, kayıttan (not *kayıtda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of kaydın. kaydın is both "of the record" (genitive) and "your record" (possessive). kaydı is likewise both the object form and "his/her record". Rule →

Questions about kayıt

What is the plural of kayıt?

The plural of kayıt ("record") is kayıtlar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of kayıt is ı, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: kayıtları, kayıtlarda, kayıtlardan.

How do you say "to the record" in Turkish?

"To the record" is kayda, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the record" is kayıtta (locative) and "from the record" is kayıttan (ablative).

Why is it kaydı and not kayıtı?

Kayıt belongs to a group of two-syllable nouns (mostly Arabic loans and body parts) whose second vowel drops when a vowel-initial suffix follows: kaydı, kayda, kaydım. With consonant-initial suffixes the vowel stays: kayıtta, kayıtlar.
