Keyif Declension: Turkish Cases of 'pleasure'

keyif means “pleasure, mood”. Its last vowel is i, so 2-way suffixes use e (keyifler) and 4-way suffixes use i (keyfin). Its last vowel drops before a vowel suffix (keyfi, keyfe) but stays before a consonant (keyifte).

Keyif in example sentences

Watch out with keyif

  • The last vowel drops. Before a vowel suffix the second vowel disappears: keyfi, keyfe, keyfim (not *keyifi, *keyife). Consonant suffixes keep it: keyifte, keyifler. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: keyifte, keyiften (not *keyifde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of keyfin. keyfin is both "of the pleasure" (genitive) and "your pleasure" (possessive). keyfi is likewise both the object form and "his/her pleasure". Rule →

Questions about keyif

What is the plural of keyif?

The plural of keyif ("pleasure") is keyifler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of keyif is i, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: keyifleri, keyiflerde, keyiflerden.

How do you say "to the pleasure" in Turkish?

"To the pleasure" is keyfe, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the pleasure" is keyifte (locative) and "from the pleasure" is keyiften (ablative).

Why is it keyfi and not keyifi?

Keyif belongs to a group of two-syllable nouns (mostly Arabic loans and body parts) whose second vowel drops when a vowel-initial suffix follows: keyfi, keyfe, keyfim. With consonant-initial suffixes the vowel stays: keyifte, keyifler.
