Dikkat Declension: Turkish Cases of 'attention'

dikkat means “attention”. Although its last vowel is a, it is a loanword that takes front-vowel suffixes (e/i/ü), so the plural is dikkatler. It is a regular noun: suffixes attach directly to dikkat, as in dikkati and dikkatte.

Dikkat in example sentences

Watch out with dikkat

  • Front suffixes after a back vowel. This loanword takes front-vowel suffixes: dikkatler, dikkati, dikkatte — not *dikkatlar, *dikkatı. Rule →
  • This t does not soften. Unlike kitap → kitabı, dikkat keeps its t: dikkati, dikkate (not *dikkadi). Loanwords and some native words are exceptions to the softening rule, so learn them as you meet them. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: dikkatte, dikkatten (not *dikkatde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of dikkatin. dikkatin is both "of the attention" (genitive) and "your attention" (possessive). dikkati is likewise both the object form and "his/her attention". Rule →

Questions about dikkat

What is the plural of dikkat?

The plural of dikkat ("attention") is dikkatler. Dikkat is a loanword that takes front-vowel suffixes despite its last vowel a, so it is dikkatler, not dikkatlar. The plural then takes case endings: dikkatleri, dikkatlerde, dikkatlerden.

How do you say "to the attention" in Turkish?

"To the attention" is dikkate, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the attention" is dikkatte (locative) and "from the attention" is dikkatten (ablative).

Why is it dikkatler and not dikkatlar?

Dikkat is a loanword whose final consonant was originally "soft" (palatal), so it takes front-vowel suffixes even though its last vowel is a: dikkatler, dikkati, dikkatte. Other examples are saat, kalp, rol and hal.
