Işık in example sentences
Watch out with ışık
- Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: ışığı, ışığa, ışığım (not
*ışıkı). Before a consonant it stays hard: ışıkta, ışıklar. Rule → - Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: ışıkta, ışıktan (not
*ışıkda). Rule → - Two meanings of ışığın. ışığın is both "of the light" (genitive) and "your light" (possessive). ışığı is likewise both the object form and "his/her light". Rule →

Questions about ışık
What is the plural of ışık?
The plural of ışık ("light") is ışıklar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of ışık is ı, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: ışıkları, ışıklarda, ışıklardan.
How do you say "to the light" in Turkish?
"To the light" is ışığa, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the light" is ışıkta (locative) and "from the light" is ışıktan (ablative).
Why does ışık become ışığı?
Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Işık follows this rule, so the accusative is ışığı and "my light" is ışığım. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: ışıkta, ışıklar.
