Watch out with çeşit

  • Softening before vowels. Final t softens before a vowel: çeşidi, çeşide, çeşidim (not *çeşiti). Before a consonant it stays hard: çeşitte, çeşitler. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: çeşitte, çeşitten (not *çeşitde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of çeşidin. çeşidin is both "of the kind" (genitive) and "your kind" (possessive). çeşidi is likewise both the object form and "his/her kind". Rule →

Questions about çeşit

What is the plural of çeşit?

The plural of çeşit ("kind") is çeşitler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of çeşit is i, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: çeşitleri, çeşitlerde, çeşitlerden.

How do you say "to the kind" in Turkish?

"To the kind" is çeşide, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the kind" is çeşitte (locative) and "from the kind" is çeşitten (ablative).

Why does çeşit become çeşidi?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Çeşit follows this rule, so the accusative is çeşidi and "my kind" is çeşidim. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: çeşitte, çeşitler.
