Watch out with çorap

  • Softening before vowels. Final p softens before a vowel: çorabı, çoraba, çorabım (not *çorapı). Before a consonant it stays hard: çorapta, çoraplar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: çorapta, çoraptan (not *çorapda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of çorabın. çorabın is both "of the sock" (genitive) and "your sock" (possessive). çorabı is likewise both the object form and "his/her sock". Rule →

Questions about çorap

What is the plural of çorap?

The plural of çorap ("sock") is çoraplar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of çorap is a, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: çorapları, çoraplarda, çoraplardan.

How do you say "to the sock" in Turkish?

"To the sock" is çoraba, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the sock" is çorapta (locative) and "from the sock" is çoraptan (ablative).

Why does çorap become çorabı?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Çorap follows this rule, so the accusative is çorabı and "my sock" is çorabım. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: çorapta, çoraplar.
