Cevap Declension: Turkish Cases of 'answer'

cevap means “answer”. Its last vowel is a, so 2-way suffixes use a (cevaplar) and 4-way suffixes use ı (cevabın). Its final p softens to b before a vowel (cevabı, cevaba) but stays hard before a consonant (cevapta).

Watch out with cevap

  • Softening before vowels. Final p softens before a vowel: cevabı, cevaba, cevabım (not *cevapı). Before a consonant it stays hard: cevapta, cevaplar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: cevapta, cevaptan (not *cevapda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of cevabın. cevabın is both "of the answer" (genitive) and "your answer" (possessive). cevabı is likewise both the object form and "his/her answer". Rule →

Questions about cevap

What is the plural of cevap?

The plural of cevap ("answer") is cevaplar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of cevap is a, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: cevapları, cevaplarda, cevaplardan.

How do you say "to the answer" in Turkish?

"To the answer" is cevaba, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the answer" is cevapta (locative) and "from the answer" is cevaptan (ablative).

Why does cevap become cevabı?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Cevap follows this rule, so the accusative is cevabı and "my answer" is cevabım. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: cevapta, cevaplar.
