Watch out with dip

  • A one-syllable word that softens. Final p softens before a vowel: dibi, dibe, dibim (not *dipi). Before a consonant it stays hard: dipte, dipler. Most one-syllable words never soften (top → topu), so this one is worth memorising. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: dipte, dipten (not *dipde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of dibin. dibin is both "of the bottom" (genitive) and "your bottom" (possessive). dibi is likewise both the object form and "his/her bottom". Rule →

Questions about dip

What is the plural of dip?

The plural of dip ("bottom") is dipler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of dip is i, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: dipleri, diplerde, diplerden.

How do you say "to the bottom" in Turkish?

"To the bottom" is dibe, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the bottom" is dipte (locative) and "from the bottom" is dipten (ablative).

Why does dip become dibi?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Dip follows this rule, so the accusative is dibi and "my bottom" is dibim. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: dipte, dipler.
