Watch out with durak

  • Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: durağı, durağa, durağım (not *durakı). Before a consonant it stays hard: durakta, duraklar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: durakta, duraktan (not *durakda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of durağın. durağın is both "of the stop" (genitive) and "your stop" (possessive). durağı is likewise both the object form and "his/her stop". Rule →

Questions about durak

What is the plural of durak?

The plural of durak ("stop") is duraklar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of durak is a, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: durakları, duraklarda, duraklardan.

How do you say "to the stop" in Turkish?

"To the stop" is durağa, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the stop" is durakta (locative) and "from the stop" is duraktan (ablative).

Why does durak become durağı?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Durak follows this rule, so the accusative is durağı and "my stop" is durağım. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: durakta, duraklar.
