Güç in example sentences

  • Bunu yapacak gücüm yok.

I don't have the strength to do this.

    Nominative case
  • Bütün gücünü kullandı.

    He used all his strength.

    Accusative case
  • Uzun yürüyüşten sonra hepimiz güçten düştük.

After the long hike we were all worn out.

    Ablative case

Watch out with güç

  • A one-syllable word that softens. Final ç softens before a vowel: gücü, güce, gücüm (not *güçü). Before a consonant it stays hard: güçte, güçler. Most one-syllable words never soften (top → topu), so this one is worth memorising. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: güçte, güçten (not *güçde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of gücün. gücün is both "of the power" (genitive) and "your power" (possessive). gücü is likewise both the object form and "his/her power". Rule →

Questions about güç

What is the plural of güç?

The plural of güç ("power") is güçler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of güç is ü, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: güçleri, güçlerde, güçlerden.

How do you say "to the power" in Turkish?

"To the power" is güce, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the power" is güçte (locative) and "from the power" is güçten (ablative).

Why does güç become gücü?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Güç follows this rule, so the accusative is gücü and "my power" is gücüm. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: güçte, güçler.
