Common mistakes with sormak

  • Öğretmene sor.

Sormak takes the dative (-(y)e / -(y)a), not a direct object: Öğretmene sor. = "Ask the teacher". The person you ask takes the dative; the thing you ask about takes the accusative: öğretmene saati sor. Öğretmeni sormak means "to ask after the teacher". Learn the rule →

  • Incorrect: sorursorar

One-syllable stems take -Ar in the aorist: sorar, sorarım. Only 13 verbs such as gelir and alır break this rule. Learn the rule →

  • Incorrect: sormazımsormam

The negative aorist drops its -z in the first person: sormam ("I do not ask"), sormayız — but sormaz, sormazsın. Learn the rule →
