Turkish Ability & Possibility (-ebilmek / -abilmek): Can & Could

Learn how to express ability, permission, and probability in Turkish using the modal suffix -(y)ebilmek / -(y)abilmek, plus the crucial inability rule (-eme/-ama).

Turkish Ability & Possibility (-ebilmek / -abilmek): Can & Could

The Ability Suffix: -(y)ebilmek / -(y)abilmek

In Turkish, the modal verb “can / be able to” is expressed by attaching -ebil / -abil directly to the verb stem, following 2-way vowel harmony. If the stem ends in a vowel, buffer letter y is inserted.

1. Positive Ability (“I can do it”)

Formula: [Verb Stem] + [-(y)ebil / -(y)abil] + [Tense Suffix] + [Person]

  • yap- (do) + -abil- + -ir- (aorist) + -im = Yapabilirim (I can do it)
  • gel- (come) + -ebil- + -ir- + -sin = Gelebilirsin (You can come)
  • konuş- (speak) + -abil- + -iyor- + -um = Konuşabiliyorum (I am able to speak)

2. The Critical Inability Rule: -eme / -ama

[!CAUTION] Common Foreigner Mistake: Beginners often try to say “I cannot go” by saying *gidebilmiyorum*. This is incorrect! In Turkish, when expressing inability (cannot), the -bil portion disappears completely!

Formula for Inability: [Stem] + [-(y)eme / -(y)ama] + [Tense] + [Person]

Verb Stem Positive (“Can”) Negative (“Cannot”) Meaning
git- (go) Gidebilirim Gidemem (Aorist) / Gidemiyorum (Continuous) I can go / I cannot go
yap- (do) Yapabilirim Yapamam / Yapamıyorum I can do / I cannot do
anla- (understand) Anlayabilirim Anlayamam / Anlayamıyorum I can understand / I cannot understand
gel- (come) Gelebiliriz Gelemeyiz / Gelemiyoruz We can come / We cannot come
