What is the Necessitative Mood? (Gereklilik Kipi)

The Turkish necessitative suffix -meli / -malı expresses:

  1. Obligation / Duty: I must do this / You have to go.
  2. Advice / Recommendation: You should visit Istanbul / We ought to study.
  3. Strong Probability: He must be at home right now.

1. Conjugation Rules for -meli / -malı

Formula: [Verb Stem] + [-meli / -malı] + [Personal Ending]

Person Gitmek (To go) Yapmak (To do) English Meaning
Ben Gitmeliyim Yapmalıyım I must / should go (or do)
Sen Gitmelisin Yapmalısın You must / should go
O Gitmeli Yapmalı He/she must go
Biz Gitmeliyiz Yapmalıyız We must / should go
Siz Gitmelisiniz Yapmalısınız You (pl) must go
Onlar Gitmeliler Yapmalılar They must go

2. Negative Form (“Must not / Should not”)

Insert the negative suffix -me / -ma before -meli / -malı:

  • git- + -me- + -meli- + -sin = Gitmemelisin (You shouldn’t go / You mustn’t go)
  • unut- + -ma- + -malı- + -yız = Unutmamalıyız (We must not forget)
  • sigara içmemelisin = You should not smoke.

3. Past Obligation: -meliydi (“Should have”)

Attach the past copula -di to express regrets or unfulfilled duties:

  • Daha çok çalışmalıydım. = I should have studied more.
  • Erken gelmeliydin. = You should have come early.
