Frequently asked questions

What is the past tense of gitmek?

The definite past (-DI) of gitmek is gittim (I went), gittin, gitti, gittik, gittiniz, gittiler. The negative is gitmedim (I did not go), and the reported past is gitmiş (he/she apparently went).

Is gitmek irregular?

Its endings are regular, but the stem changes: git- becomes gid- before a vowel (gidiyorum, gideceğim, gider) and stays git- before a consonant (gittim, gitmeliyim). Only a few verbs soften like this: gitmek, etmek and its compounds, and tatmak.

How do you say "I will go" in Turkish?

"I will go" is gideceğim. "I won't go" is gitmeyeceğim, and "Will you go?" is gidecek misin? For plans you have already made, Turkish also uses the present continuous: gidiyorum.
