Frequently asked questions

What is the past tense of başlamak?

The definite past (-DI) of başlamak is başladım (I started), başladın, başladı, başladık, başladınız, başladılar. The negative is başlamadım (I did not start), and the reported past is başlamış (he/she apparently started).

Is başlamak irregular?

No, başlamak is a regular verb. Every tense is built from the stem başla- with the standard suffixes: başlıyorum, başladım, başlayacağım, and its aorist başlar follows the rule. The final vowel narrows before -yor (başlıyorum), which is the normal rule for vowel-final stems.

How do you say "I will start" in Turkish?

"I will start" is başlayacağım. "I won't start" is başlamayacağım, and "Will you start?" is başlayacak mısın? For plans you have already made, Turkish also uses the present continuous: başlıyorum.
