Watch out with yolculuk

  • Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: yolculuğu, yolculuğa, yolculuğum (not *yolculuku). Before a consonant it stays hard: yolculukta, yolculuklar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: yolculukta, yolculuktan (not *yolculukda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of yolculuğun. yolculuğun is both "of the journey" (genitive) and "your journey" (possessive). yolculuğu is likewise both the object form and "his/her journey". Rule →

Questions about yolculuk

What is the plural of yolculuk?

The plural of yolculuk ("journey") is yolculuklar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of yolculuk is u, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: yolculukları, yolculuklarda, yolculuklardan.

How do you say "to the journey" in Turkish?

"To the journey" is yolculuğa, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the journey" is yolculukta (locative) and "from the journey" is yolculuktan (ablative).

Why does yolculuk become yolculuğu?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Yolculuk follows this rule, so the accusative is yolculuğu and "my journey" is yolculuğum. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: yolculukta, yolculuklar.
