    Locative case
  • Uzun yıllar sonra yurduna döndü.

He returned to his homeland after many years.

    Dative case
  • Yurttan ayrılıp bir eve taşındık.

    Ablative case

Watch out with yurt

  • A one-syllable word that softens. Final t softens before a vowel: yurdu, yurda, yurdum (not *yurtu). Before a consonant it stays hard: yurtta, yurtlar. Most one-syllable words never soften (top → topu), so this one is worth memorising. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: yurtta, yurttan (not *yurtda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of yurdun. yurdun is both "of the dormitory" (genitive) and "your dormitory" (possessive). yurdu is likewise both the object form and "his/her dormitory". Rule →

Questions about yurt

What is the plural of yurt?

The plural of yurt ("dormitory") is yurtlar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of yurt is u, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: yurtları, yurtlarda, yurtlardan.

How do you say "to the dormitory" in Turkish?

"To the dormitory" is yurda, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the dormitory" is yurtta (locative) and "from the dormitory" is yurttan (ablative).

Why does yurt become yurdu?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Yurt follows this rule, so the accusative is yurdu and "my dormitory" is yurdum. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: yurtta, yurtlar.
