I stayed in bed all day.

  • Çocuklar saat dokuzda yatağa girer.

The children go to bed at nine.

    Dative case
  • Bu sabah yataktan zor kalktım.

I struggled to get out of bed this morning.

    Ablative case

Watch out with yatak

  • Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: yatağı, yatağa, yatağım (not *yatakı). Before a consonant it stays hard: yatakta, yataklar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: yatakta, yataktan (not *yatakda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of yatağın. yatağın is both "of the bed" (genitive) and "your bed" (possessive). yatağı is likewise both the object form and "his/her bed". Rule →

Questions about yatak

What is the plural of yatak?

The plural of yatak ("bed") is yataklar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of yatak is a, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: yatakları, yataklarda, yataklardan.

How do you say "to the bed" in Turkish?

"To the bed" is yatağa, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the bed" is yatakta (locative) and "from the bed" is yataktan (ablative).

Why does yatak become yatağı?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Yatak follows this rule, so the accusative is yatağı and "my bed" is yatağım. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: yatakta, yataklar.
