Watch out with mutfak

  • Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: mutfağı, mutfağa, mutfağım (not *mutfakı). Before a consonant it stays hard: mutfakta, mutfaklar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: mutfakta, mutfaktan (not *mutfakda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of mutfağın. mutfağın is both "of the kitchen" (genitive) and "your kitchen" (possessive). mutfağı is likewise both the object form and "his/her kitchen". Rule →

Questions about mutfak

What is the plural of mutfak?

The plural of mutfak ("kitchen") is mutfaklar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of mutfak is a, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: mutfakları, mutfaklarda, mutfaklardan.

How do you say "to the kitchen" in Turkish?

"To the kitchen" is mutfağa, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the kitchen" is mutfakta (locative) and "from the kitchen" is mutfaktan (ablative).

Why does mutfak become mutfağı?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Mutfak follows this rule, so the accusative is mutfağı and "my kitchen" is mutfağım. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: mutfakta, mutfaklar.
