Watch out with müzik

  • Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: müziği, müziğe, müziğim (not *müziki). Before a consonant it stays hard: müzikte, müzikler. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: müzikte, müzikten (not *müzikde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of müziğin. müziğin is both "of the music" (genitive) and "your music" (possessive). müziği is likewise both the object form and "his/her music". Rule →

Questions about müzik

What is the plural of müzik?

The plural of müzik ("music") is müzikler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of müzik is i, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: müzikleri, müziklerde, müziklerden.

How do you say "to the music" in Turkish?

"To the music" is müziğe, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the music" is müzikte (locative) and "from the music" is müzikten (ablative).

Why does müzik become müziği?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Müzik follows this rule, so the accusative is müziği and "my music" is müziğim. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: müzikte, müzikler.
