Örnek Declension: Turkish Cases of 'example'

örnek means “example”. Its last vowel is e, so 2-way suffixes use e (örnekler) and 4-way suffixes use i (örneğin). Its final k softens to ğ before a vowel (örneği, örneğe) but stays hard before a consonant (örnekte).

Örnek in example sentences

  • Bir örnek verebilir misiniz?

    Could you give an example?

    Nominative case
  • Öğretmen örneği tahtaya yazdı.

The teacher wrote the example on the board.

    Accusative case
  • Bu örneğe dikkatlice bak.

    Look carefully at this example.

    Dative case

Watch out with örnek

  • Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: örneği, örneğe, örneğim (not *örneki). Before a consonant it stays hard: örnekte, örnekler. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: örnekte, örnekten (not *örnekde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of örneğin. örneğin is both "of the example" (genitive) and "your example" (possessive). örneği is likewise both the object form and "his/her example". Rule →

Questions about örnek

What is the plural of örnek?

The plural of örnek ("example") is örnekler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of örnek is e, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: örnekleri, örneklerde, örneklerden.

How do you say "to the example" in Turkish?

"To the example" is örneğe, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the example" is örnekte (locative) and "from the example" is örnekten (ablative).

Why does örnek become örneği?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Örnek follows this rule, so the accusative is örneği and "my example" is örneğim. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: örnekte, örnekler.
