  • Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: uçağı, uçağa, uçağım (not *uçakı). Before a consonant it stays hard: uçakta, uçaklar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: uçakta, uçaktan (not *uçakda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of uçağın. uçağın is both "of the plane" (genitive) and "your plane" (possessive). uçağı is likewise both the object form and "his/her plane". Rule →

Questions about uçak

What is the plural of uçak?

The plural of uçak ("plane") is uçaklar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of uçak is a, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: uçakları, uçaklarda, uçaklardan.

How do you say "to the plane" in Turkish?

"To the plane" is uçağa, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the plane" is uçakta (locative) and "from the plane" is uçaktan (ablative).

Why does uçak become uçağı?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Uçak follows this rule, so the accusative is uçağı and "my plane" is uçağım. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: uçakta, uçaklar.
