Example sentences with oynamak

Common mistakes with oynamak

  • Futbol oynuyoruz.

Oynamak is for games, sports and acting (bir filmde oynamak). For musical instruments use çalmak.

  • Incorrect: oynayorumoynuyorum

Before -yor the final a of oyna- changes to a narrow vowel: oynuyorum. In other tenses it stays: oynadım, oynayacağım. Learn the rule →

  • oynar

Vowel stems simply add -r in the aorist: oynar, oynarım. Don't mix up oynar (habit: "he/she plays") with oynuyor (right now: "he/she is playing"). Learn the rule →

What is the past tense of oynamak?

The definite past (-DI) of oynamak is oynadım (I played), oynadın, oynadı, oynadık, oynadınız, oynadılar. The negative is oynamadım (I did not play), and the reported past is oynamış (he/she apparently played).

Is oynamak irregular?

No, oynamak is a regular verb. Every tense is built from the stem oyna- with the standard suffixes: oynuyorum, oynadım, oynayacağım, and its aorist oynar follows the rule. The final vowel narrows before -yor (oynuyorum), which is the normal rule for vowel-final stems.

How do you say "I will play" in Turkish?
