Turkish Possessive Suffixes Chart (Printable Cheat Sheet)

In Turkish, "my house" is one word: evim. The possessive suffix changes with the person, with vowel harmony and with whether the noun ends in a vowel, which gives 24 combinations that learners mix up for months. This sheet shows them all in one table, with the matching genitive pronoun (benim, senin, onun…) and four example nouns per person.

The second half covers what happens next: adding a case after the possessive (evimde, arabasını, kitabından) and the two noun-compound patterns that use the 3rd-person suffix, such as Türk kahvesi and Ali'nin arabası. Every inflected form comes from TurkLogic's declension engine.

The genitive pronoun in brackets is optional: evim already means "my house". Use benim evim for emphasis.

Order: noun + (plural) + possessive + case. After the 3rd person (-(s)I, -lArI) the case takes an extra n: arabasını, arabasında.

3 · Two kinds of noun compound

Category compound: noun + noun-(s)I

  • Türk kahvesi Turkish coffee
  • otobüs durağı bus stop
  • okul müdürü school principal
  • doğum günü birthday

Specific owner: noun-(n)In + noun-(s)I

  • Ali'nin arabası Ali's car
  • kadının çantası the woman's bag
  • evin kapısı the door of the house
  • çocukların odası the children's room

Sound changes before the suffix

oğul → oğlum, oğlu · ağız → ağzım, ağzı · renk → rengim, rengi · su → suyum, suyu

Vowel drop, consonant softening and the irregular su → suyum.

Watch out: -lArI is ambiguous

evleri = "their house", "his/her houses" or "their houses". Turkish never doubles -lAr, so add onların or rely on context: onların evi / onların evleri.

Possessive Suffixes: FAQ

Do I need benim with evim?

No. The suffix already shows the owner, so evim alone means "my house". Add benim, senin and so on only for emphasis or contrast: Bu benim evim, senin değil (This is my house, not yours).

Why is it arabası but evi?

The 3rd-person possessive is -(s)I: after a vowel it needs the buffer s (arabası, kedisi), after a consonant it is just the harmonised vowel (evi, okulu, kitabı).

What does evleri mean?

It can mean "their house", "his/her houses" or "their houses". Turkish avoids a double -lAr, so context (or onların) tells you which one is meant.

How do I save the possessive suffixes as a PDF?

Click "Print / Save as PDF", then choose "Save as PDF" (or "Microsoft Print to PDF") as the printer. The site header, menus and buttons are removed automatically, and the sheet fits A4 and US Letter paper. On a phone, use the share menu and choose Print.
