Turkish Family Words Flashcards: Teyze, Hala, Dayı, Amca
Turkish family vocabulary is more precise than English. An aunt is teyze if she is your mother's sister and hala if she is your father's sister; an uncle is dayı on your mother's side and amca on your father's. Grandmothers split the same way: anneanne (mother's mother) and babaanne (father's mother). Older siblings have their own titles too: abla for an older sister and ağabey (said abi) for an older brother.
These words are also used far beyond the family. Children call any woman of their mother's age teyze, a shopkeeper may call a young man abi, and amca is a friendly way to address an older man. Learning them is as much about culture as about vocabulary.
