Watch out with köpek

  • Softening before vowels. Final k softens before a vowel: köpeği, köpeğe, köpeğim (not *köpeki). Before a consonant it stays hard: köpekte, köpekler. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: köpekte, köpekten (not *köpekde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of köpeğin. köpeğin is both "of the dog" (genitive) and "your dog" (possessive). köpeği is likewise both the object form and "his/her dog". Rule →

Questions about köpek

What is the plural of köpek?

The plural of köpek ("dog") is köpekler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of köpek is e, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: köpekleri, köpeklerde, köpeklerden.

How do you say "to the dog" in Turkish?

"To the dog" is köpeğe, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the dog" is köpekte (locative) and "from the dog" is köpekten (ablative).

Why does köpek become köpeği?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Köpek follows this rule, so the accusative is köpeği and "my dog" is köpeğim. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: köpekte, köpekler.
