Watch out with kilit

  • Softening before vowels. Final t softens before a vowel: kilidi, kilide, kilidim (not *kiliti). Before a consonant it stays hard: kilitte, kilitler. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: kilitte, kilitten (not *kilitde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of kilidin. kilidin is both "of the lock" (genitive) and "your lock" (possessive). kilidi is likewise both the object form and "his/her lock". Rule →

Questions about kilit

What is the plural of kilit?

The plural of kilit ("lock") is kilitler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of kilit is i, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: kilitleri, kilitlerde, kilitlerden.

How do you say "to the lock" in Turkish?

"To the lock" is kilide, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the lock" is kilitte (locative) and "from the lock" is kilitten (ablative).

Why does kilit become kilidi?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Kilit follows this rule, so the accusative is kilidi and "my lock" is kilidim. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: kilitte, kilitler.
