Watch out with kanat

  • Softening before vowels. Final t softens before a vowel: kanadı, kanada, kanadım (not *kanatı). Before a consonant it stays hard: kanatta, kanatlar. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: kanatta, kanattan (not *kanatda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of kanadın. kanadın is both "of the wing" (genitive) and "your wing" (possessive). kanadı is likewise both the object form and "his/her wing". Rule →

Questions about kanat

What is the plural of kanat?

The plural of kanat ("wing") is kanatlar. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of kanat is a, a back vowel, so it takes -lar. The plural then takes case endings: kanatları, kanatlarda, kanatlardan.

How do you say "to the wing" in Turkish?

"To the wing" is kanada, the dative case (-a). Similarly, "in / at the wing" is kanatta (locative) and "from the wing" is kanattan (ablative).

Why does kanat become kanadı?

Final p, ç, t and k soften to b, c, d and ğ (g after n) when a vowel follows. Kanat follows this rule, so the accusative is kanadı and "my wing" is kanadım. Before a consonant the hard letter stays: kanatta, kanatlar.
