Fiyat Declension: Turkish Cases of 'price'

fiyat means “price”. Its last vowel is a, so 2-way suffixes use a (fiyatlar) and 4-way suffixes use ı (fiyatın). It is a regular noun: suffixes attach directly to fiyat, as in fiyatı and fiyatta.

Fiyat in example sentences

  • Fiyatlar her ay artıyor.

    Prices go up every month.

    Nominative case
  • Fiyatını sorabilir miyim?

May I ask how much it is?

    Accusative case
  • Bu fiyata başka bir yerde bulamazsın.

You won't find it anywhere else at this price.

    Dative case

Watch out with fiyat

  • This t does not soften. Unlike kitap → kitabı, fiyat keeps its t: fiyatı, fiyata (not *fiyadı). Loanwords and some native words are exceptions to the softening rule, so learn them as you meet them. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: fiyatta, fiyattan (not *fiyatda). Rule →
  • Two meanings of fiyatın. fiyatın is both "of the price" (genitive) and "your price" (possessive). fiyatı is likewise both the object form and "his/her price". Rule →
