Turkish Nouns with All Cases Flashcards: 43 Everyday Nouns

Learning a Turkish noun really means learning seven words: the dictionary form plus six case forms. This deck gives you all of them on the back of each card, so every review also drills the sound rules: kitap becomes kitabı and kitaba (p softens to b), şehir becomes şehre (the i drops), kapı takes a buffer y in kapıyı, and saat takes front-vowel endings because it is a loanword.

The nouns were chosen to cover every pattern you meet at A1: consonant and vowel endings, front and back vowels, softening and non-softening words (çocuğu but sokakta), vowel drop, and the irregular su → suyu. Each example sentence uses one of the case forms in a natural context, so you see what the case means as well as how it is built.

Progress is saved in this browser only.

The interactive player needs JavaScript. You can still study every card in the table below, or enable JavaScript to flip cards, track your progress and download the deck for Anki.

Download the deck for Anki

Prefer to study in Anki or another spaced-repetition app? Download all 43 cards as an Anki import file. Each note has five fields: Turkish, English, Example TR, Example EN and Tags (TurkLogic, the deck name and the CEFR level). The CSV version also includes the grammar notes and opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Quizlet or Memrise.

Free for personal study. Files are created on your device; nothing is uploaded.

How to import into Anki

  1. Download turklogic-nouns-with-cases-anki.txt with the button on the left.
  2. Open Anki on your computer (2.1.55 or newer) and choose File › Import.
  3. Select the file. Anki reads the header lines automatically: tab separator, plain text, five columns, tags in column 5 and the deck TurkLogic::Nouns with Cases.
  4. Pick a note type. Basic (and reversed card) gives you TR → EN and EN → TR cards. Map Turkish to Front and English to Back; to see the examples, add two fields to the note type first and map Example TR and Example EN to them.
  5. Click Import, then sync to AnkiDroid or AnkiMobile to study on your phone.

AnkiDroid can import the same file directly: Deck list › ⋮ › Import.

Nouns with Cases flashcards: FAQ

How many cases does Turkish have?

Six suffixed cases plus the bare nominative: accusative (-(y)I), dative (-(y)A), locative (-DA), ablative (-DAn), genitive (-(n)In) and instrumental (-(y)lA). Every case suffix follows vowel harmony, and the locative and ablative change d to t after a voiceless consonant.

Why does kitap become kitabı but top stays topu?

Most nouns of two or more syllables ending in p, ç, t or k soften that consonant before a vowel (kitabı, ağacı, çocuğu). Most one-syllable nouns do not (topu, saçı, süte), with a set of common exceptions such as renk → rengi and kalp → kalbi.

How do I study the Nouns with Cases flashcards?

Press the card (or Space) to see the answer, then choose Know or Again. Known cards move up through five Leitner boxes and come back after 1, 3, 7 and 21 days; missed cards return to box 1 and reappear a few cards later. Your progress is saved in this browser, and you can switch between TR → EN and EN → TR at any time.

Can I use the Nouns with Cases deck in Anki?

Yes. Use "Download for Anki" to get a tab-separated import file with all 43 cards, then choose File › Import in Anki. The file's header lines set the separator, columns, tags and deck name for you. A CSV version is also available for spreadsheets and other flashcard apps.
