Turkish Food and Drink Flashcards: Ordering, Breakfast and Market Words

Food is where most visitors first use their Turkish, so this deck is built around real situations: a Turkish breakfast (kahvaltı) with peynir, zeytin and bal; a trip to the market for domates, salatalık and meyve; and the restaurant phrases for ordering, asking what is in a dish and requesting the bill.

Taste words such as acı, tatlı, tuzlu and ekşi are included because you will hear them constantly, and acı alone can save your lunch: it means both 'spicy' and 'bitter'. A few cards also show the suffixes -li and -siz that turn food words into descriptions: şekerli (with sugar), sütsüz (without milk).

The interactive player needs JavaScript. You can still study every card in the table below, or enable JavaScript to flip cards, track your progress and download the deck for Anki.

Download the deck for Anki

Prefer to study in Anki or another spaced-repetition app? Download all 44 cards as an Anki import file. Each note has five fields: Turkish, English, Example TR, Example EN and Tags (TurkLogic, the deck name and the CEFR level). The CSV version also includes the grammar notes and opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Quizlet or Memrise.

Free for personal study. Files are created on your device; nothing is uploaded.

How to import into Anki

  1. Download turklogic-food-drink-anki.txt with the button on the left.
  2. Open Anki on your computer (2.1.55 or newer) and choose File › Import.
  3. Select the file. Anki reads the header lines automatically: tab separator, plain text, five columns, tags in column 5 and the deck TurkLogic::Food & Drink.
  4. Pick a note type. Basic (and reversed card) gives you TR → EN and EN → TR cards. Map Turkish to Front and English to Back; to see the examples, add two fields to the note type first and map Example TR and Example EN to them.
  5. Click Import, then sync to AnkiDroid or AnkiMobile to study on your phone.

AnkiDroid can import the same file directly: Deck list › ⋮ › Import.

Food & Drink flashcards: FAQ

How do you order food politely in Turkish?

Use istiyorum (I want), alabilir miyim (can I have) or the polite aorist question: Bir çay alabilir miyim? Bir menemen lütfen also works. To get the bill, say Hesap lütfen or Hesabı alabilir miyim?

What does acı mean on a Turkish menu?

Acı means spicy (hot) when it describes food, and bitter for drinks like coffee. Ask Acı mı? (Is it spicy?) or say Acısız olsun, lütfen (Not spicy, please).

How do I study the Food & Drink flashcards?

Press the card (or Space) to see the answer, then choose Know or Again. Known cards move up through five Leitner boxes and come back after 1, 3, 7 and 21 days; missed cards return to box 1 and reappear a few cards later. Your progress is saved in this browser, and you can switch between TR → EN and EN → TR at any time.

Can I use the Food & Drink deck in Anki?

Yes. Use "Download for Anki" to get a tab-separated import file with all 44 cards, then choose File › Import in Anki. The file's header lines set the separator, columns, tags and deck name for you. A CSV version is also available for spreadsheets and other flashcard apps.
