Watch out with vakit

  • The last vowel drops. Before a vowel suffix the second vowel disappears: vakti, vakte, vaktim (not *vakiti, *vakite). Consonant suffixes keep it: vakitte, vakitler. Rule →
  • Locative with t, not d. After a voiceless consonant the locative and ablative start with t: vakitte, vakitten (not *vakitde). Rule →
  • Two meanings of vaktin. vaktin is both "of the time" (genitive) and "your time" (possessive). vakti is likewise both the object form and "his/her time". Rule →

Questions about vakit

What is the plural of vakit?

The plural of vakit ("time") is vakitler. The plural suffix follows 2-way vowel harmony: the last vowel of vakit is i, a front vowel, so it takes -ler. The plural then takes case endings: vakitleri, vakitlerde, vakitlerden.

How do you say "to the time" in Turkish?

"To the time" is vakte, the dative case (-e). Similarly, "in / at the time" is vakitte (locative) and "from the time" is vakitten (ablative).

Why is it vakti and not vakiti?

Vakit belongs to a group of two-syllable nouns (mostly Arabic loans and body parts) whose second vowel drops when a vowel-initial suffix follows: vakti, vakte, vaktim. With consonant-initial suffixes the vowel stays: vakitte, vakitler.
