Ada Declension: Turkish Cases of 'island'

ada means “island”. Its last vowel is a, so 2-way suffixes use a (adalar) and 4-way suffixes use ı (adanın). Because it ends in a vowel, vowel-initial suffixes need a buffer letter: adayı, adanın, adası.

Watch out with ada

  • Same spelling, different word. adam (my island) is spelled exactly like adam (man). Context, or the pronoun benim adam, tells them apart.
  • Buffer letters after the final vowel. Vowel suffixes need a buffer: adayı (y), adanın (n), adası (s). After adası a case suffix adds n: adasında, not *adasıda. Rule →
