A visit to a Turkish barber (berber) or hair salon (kuaför) is often more than a quick cut. At many neighbourhood barbers you’ll be offered tea, the haircut is followed by a hair wash and a hot towel, and the whole thing ends with a splash of lemon cologne. It’s a pleasant routine, as long as you can explain what you want.
Saying kısa (short) only gets you so far. This guide gives you the phrases for clipper numbers, trims, layers, fringe and colour, two dialogues, and the etiquette, including the phrase you’ll hear at the end of every haircut.
1. What to expect
- Tea or coffee. You’ll often be offered çay or Türk kahvesi while you wait. It’s free and accepting is perfectly normal.
- The traditional barber routine. A men’s haircut often ends with a hair wash (yıkama), a hot towel (sıcak havlu) for a shave, and a splash of lemon cologne (limon kolonyası). Some traditional barbers also singe ear hair with a quick flame (kulak kılı yakma). If you’d rather skip it, say so (see the phrases below).
- The blessing at the end. When the cut is finished and the cape comes off, the barber or stylist will say “Sıhhatler olsun!” (lit. may there be health). Reply with “Sağ olun, elinize sağlık!” (Thank you, great job!). Both phrases are covered in our guide to essential Turkish expressions.
- Greeting. As you walk in, Merhaba, kolay gelsin is the natural greeting for people at work; see what “kolay gelsin” means.
- Tipping (bahşiş). Tipping is customary but not compulsory. Many people round up or leave a small cash tip for the barber, sometimes with a little extra for the assistant who washed their hair.
2. Dialogue: at the barber’s

Usta: Hoş geldin kardeşim, buyur geç! Çay içer misin?
(Welcome, my friend, take a seat! Will you have a tea?)
Liam: Hoş bulduk usta. Açık bir çay olursa iyi olur.
(Thanks. A weak tea would be nice.)
Usta: Hemen geliyor. Nasıl keselim?
(Coming right up. How shall we cut it?)
Liam: Yanları ve enseyi makineyle iki numara alalım. Üstten de makasla biraz kısaltalım.
(Let's do the sides and back with the clippers on a two. And take a bit off the top with scissors.)
Usta: Tamam. Sakal da yapalım mı?
(OK. Shall we do the beard too?)
Liam: Evet, ama çok kısaltmayalım. Sadece yanak ve boyun çizgisini jiletle düzeltelim.
(Yes, but let's not make it too short. Just tidy the cheek and neck lines with a razor.)

Liam: Sağ ol usta, eline emeğine sağlık!
(Thanks, great work!)Requests like alalım, kısaltalım and düzeltelim (“let’s take”, “let’s shorten”, “let’s tidy”) use the first-person plural of the optative, a soft and friendly way to ask for something.
3. Dialogue: at the hair salon

(Hello Sophie, welcome! What are we doing today?)
Sophie: Merhaba! Saçımın boyunu çok kısaltmak istemiyorum, sadece kırıkları alabilir miyiz?
(Hi! I don't want to lose much length, could we just take off the split ends?)
Kuaför: Tabii. Düz mü keselim, katlı mı?
(Of course. Shall I cut it straight or layered?)
Sophie: Hafif katlı olsun. Bir de kâkül kesmek istiyorum. Dip boyası da yapabilir miyiz?
(Lightly layered, please. And I'd like a fringe. Could we also do my roots?)
Kuaför: Olur. Kendi renginize en yakın tonu seçelim. Kesimden sonra da fön çekeriz.
(Sure. Let's choose the shade closest to your natural colour. After the cut we'll blow-dry it.)
Sophie: Fön çok hacimli olmasın, düz ve doğal olsun lütfen.
(Not too much volume, please, straight and natural.)
Kuaför: Anlaştık. Önce yıkamaya geçelim.

5. Phrases to save on your phone
- Çok kısaltmayın lütfen, sadece şeklini düzeltin. — Please don’t cut it too short, just tidy the shape.
- Biraz daha kısa olsun. — A bit shorter, please. (daha = more; see comparatives)
- Kulaklarımı yakmayın lütfen. — Please don’t singe my ears.
- Jöle / sprey sürmeyin. — No gel / hairspray, please.
- Bu fotoğraftaki gibi olsun. — Like in this photo, please.
